Every few years the Deep South, all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, get an extra supply of northern songbirds, perhaps due to less winter food available further north. Along with the fairly common goldfinch, species include Purple Finch, Pine Siskin and others like fruit-eating Cedar Waxwings.
Thus far, my area has already recorded Purple Finch, so we may be headed for one of those exciting winters. [This is not temperature related.] We had one of these winters 4-5 years ago.
You might want to put out your seed feeders and be extra vigilant.
Piggybacking a tangential topic, likely caused by the absence of cold fronts this fall, my area has had an inordinate number of nonwintering species, especially warblers like bay-breasts, magnolia, redstarts, etc. I have been having 2-3 species per day. This is a remarkable phenomenon and could portend an astounding trend in ornithology.
It also scares the Hell out of me for our birds.
