Thanks for the clarification, Tina! I don't believe the first bird has been
refound, but the bird that Dave Pereksta had at Bob Kildee yesterday was
very cooperative this morning, and several of us had great looks at it. A
very handsome bird!
If I can offer my two cents: personally, I think it can be appropriate to
post information about a bird that you haven't seen first-hand,
particularly if the original spotter isn't active on this listserv or
eBird. Better to get the word out. Of course, because you aren't the
primary source, some details may get mixed up or miscommunicated. If that's
the case, then you can simply explain yourself, and I think most people
will understand. Some may be frustrated having looked in the wrong place,
which I think is a reasonable feeling. But, I'd advise against accusations
without more information. No one likes being accused of things they didn't
intend, and I believe it's good practice to assume the best intentions of a
person.
That being said, if you felt like that has happened to you in a private
conversation, this is not the forum to call that out. You can resolve that
issue privately between the parties involved without bringing it to the
general public's attention. We don't have all of the information about this
conversation, and it creates unnecessary curiosity about this private
conflict. If this conversation happened publicly on the listserv, then
that's a different story.
To be clear, I have no personal insight into this particular situation
whatsoever. So, I'm a disinterested party here commenting on what I believe
is best practice for this listserv. Others are free to disagree. Healthy
conflicts are inevitable among people, especially if they are as passionate
about a subject as we are about our feathered friends. So, let's just make
sure we have them in an appropriate manner.
